There are two WWOOFers from Japan here now, Yuki and Yumi, both about 18 years old. They are happiness and cuteness incarnate.
Yuki’s English is fairly good, Yumi’s not so much. That makes it even more fun. Yuki and I can carry on a conversation, Yumi and I get by with mostly gestures and acting things out. Pretty entertaining.
They had a day off recently and went to explore Newcastle. When they got home, Yumi was sick with a fever and couldn’t do anything but lay in bed. By about 8 o'clock, when the rest of us were prepping dinner and Yumi didn’t want to eat anything, Yuki and I decided to walk into town and get her some medicine. Now, this is a small town. One road. Big fields. Really, really dark. We hadn’t been walking even 60 seconds when some guy driving down the road yelled suggestively at us (looking all cute in our boots and fleece mind you). Yuki screamed and grabbed me and wouldn’t let go. It was hilarious. We held onto each other until the lights of town were in sight, Yuki confiding in me that being in the country, so dark and quiet, was terrifying for her. We made it to the store, found something to bring down a fever, and headed back. The way home was just as eventful, with a few partiers coming down the road shouting greetings at us. We just looked at each other, shrugged our shoulders and laughed. Crazy Australians.
We only tripped over ourselves a few times on the walk back, distracted by the stars. Overall, a good night.
